Japan's turbo monster GT of 1993 will still keep up with a new STI, wheels spinning and all (to 60 and beyond!)

It's super.

Do you have one? Or is your name just superfandom?

Excuse me, but I prefer to call it Suprafandom. (Does that answer your question?) haha

Still one of the best cars of all time.
Crime they stopped making it.

I support this message. There is some rage to come, no doubt, but I am really reveling in the Supra appreciation of a select few comments right now.

Dunnik, your logic cannot be argued against.

Ha ok, good I'm glad. The R33 was much better anyway

Imagine if Japan had kept the supercoupes going.
The NSX, Supra, 300ZX and Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 should have had faster follow ups. And Mazda should have just given up on the rotary and put a twin turbo I6 or V6 in the RX-8. Or maybe a small displacement twin turbo V8. That would have been sweet.

It would have been fantastic. I think the JZA80, Z32, and original NSX would have been the best due to the fantastic combination of automotive culture, lessened regulation, and manufacturer spirit at that time, but to keep the nameplates going would have been fantastic. I would've loved (obviously) to see a JZA80 be produced with only minor tweaks for safety and efficiency and performance (and possibly cosmetics) for 10 more years as a halo car for the Toyota brand and an engineering study. A 500 rwhp Supra is easily created with tuning and minor modification. Imagine a 450hp 3.4L 3JZ mated to the same Getrag 6MT with basically the same great interior and exterior. Better suspension and more use of Aluminum would have been possible out of a next-gen Supra for sure, but emissions standards really killed it in the end.

Given up on the rotary!? HELL NO. That's what makes Mazda, Mazda! I bet if they started the rotary experiment at the same time that piston engine started, it would surpass it! - Butthurt Rotary lover.

I wonder if Japan bears a lot of responsibility for sports cars losing popularity? A lot of people were loyal to Japanese car brands in the 90s and almost all the Japanese sports cars disappeared, at least temporarily.

That's a good point; I am sure that had some bearing on sports car demand. The (automotive) cultural change in Japan killed the Japanese sports car itself, which might have started a domino effect. That's not to say you still don't have people lusting after these perfectly-balanced cars, as they are products of the eras themselves. It's not unheard of for people to shell out $80k for the ultimate collector Supra or NSX. The 3000GT was too plagued with issues, as was the 300ZX, so their values have suffered (in addition to their less-timeless looks in most people's eyes). The RX-7 is avoided for the Wankel which makes it so unique and incredible, so I would go with that for an investment. Anyways, I've gone way off topic here...

Sorry sorry, I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I know the rotary has a rabid fan base. I just wonder if Mazda would have sold more cars if they moved away from it because so people gearheads are petrified of rotary maintenance/repair costs!

If I was building a personal collection I would go with the Supra, NSX and RX-7. Would be awesome!

Oh Japan, how the mighty have fallen.

Too true. Land of the rising setting sun? The remaining evidence of their automotive greatness will one day be totally rusted or wrecked...

Oh boy. That's the stuff of dreams right there. There needs to be a way to start collaborative funding for automotive collections aside from CCC!

I'm already thinking about never selling a car again. I just need to work out where to put them. I'll save all the cars and hope that they appreciate one day. Might work out since I only go RWD coupes!

Nvm one of my cars is a sedan. I'm an idiot, lol

Do it! Just rent them out to responsible people and profit!

Oh. Then I guess it's an unreasonable goal :(
![]() 04/22/2014 at 20:49 |

but it's an M3 sedan so maybe it will still be worth money some day :)

I'd say, if Mazda gave proper maintenance tips to their owners, proper training to their mechanics and would had use a higher viscosity oil from day 1 and not give in into the MPG race and put 5w20...it would had been a better car.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 20:53 |

That all makes perfect sense.
You need a De Lorean. That way you can go back in time and tell Mazda's management what they need to do!

I *love* E90 M3s. Saw two at the used showroom at the local BMW dealership black/black and they looked so badass up close. The both had massive BBS wheels and 6MTs, and I'd really wished I had $40,000 burning a hole in my pocket at that moment.

I did...but they didn't understand me at all. All I heard was NANDATO non stop. Then someone caught me in the DeLorean while leaving. This is why we had the Dome Zero....

LOL

They are the best deals around right now. Exotic feeling and sounding engine in a pretty nice car for $40K.

Hell, I would consider buying one when my favorite car can be had at that price! Fantastic car, from everything I've heard.
![]() 04/22/2014 at 21:34 |

As long as you don't have a long commute it's the perfect car!
If you do then the MPGs can be brutal.

I am sure I would get hammered at the pump. As a weekend car, though, I'm sure it's fantastic.

if only it had cylinder deactivation like the C7...
